Hilo is the shire chair of the shire of Hawaiʻi and is established in the District of South Hilo. The village overlooks Hilo embayment, situated upon two protect volcanoes; Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano upon which are sited some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories.

Hilo is dwelling to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch carnival, a week-long celebration of very old and up to date hula which takes location annually after Easter. Hilo is also dwelling to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut company, one of the world's premier producers of macadamia nuts. It is assisted by Hilo worldwide Airport, located inside the CDP.
Hilo is one of the smallest costly Hawaiian cities to reside in; it has a median dwelling and condo cost of $294,909. While they are inclined to be more expensive than dwellings on the mainland, dwellings in Hilo are around 40% less costly than those in the rest of Hawaii.
